A Free Gift for You

The Christians at High Point Bible Chapel don't have material wealth and riches to distribute, but we are eager to present the infinitely priceless gift of God. This gift is eternal life through Jesus Christ the Lord.

Needing the Gift

Most people think that God will let them into heaven if their good deeds outweigh their bad deeds. But the Bible says that God is perfectly holy (spiritually clean), and He requires people to be perfect to get into heaven. Man, on the other hand, is sinful. Even our best deeds are “filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6) in the eyes of God. “There is none who does good, no, not one.” (Psalm 53:3) Nobody meets God's perfect standard. And God is not only perfectly holy, He is perfectly just. His perfect justice requires that sins must be paid for. As payment for the infinite offenses we commit against Him, God requires an eternity in the lake of fire. “The soul who sins shall die.” (Ezekiel 18:20) We are all in the same boat—and it is sinking. That's the bad news.

Providing the Gift

The gospel, or good news, is that God has provided the payment that His justice demands. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) God provided an infinite payment, through Jesus Christ, God the Son, for our sins. “For He [God the Father] made Him who knew no sin [Jesus] to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

The Lord Jesus Christ paid the full penalty for our sins through his death, burial, and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). He took the punishment we deserve, fully satisfying God the Father's demands for justice. “Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You [God the Father] make His [Jesus'] soul an offering for sin…He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.” (Isaiah 53:10-11)

Because God the Father's demands for justice have been fully satisfied, He can and does offer the benefits of Christ's work to all humankind as a free gift. “Being justified [declared righteous] freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:24)

Receiving the Gift

God has given you a choice as to whether you will receive or reject His free gift of salvation. How do you receive the gift? “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that [salvation] not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

What is faith? It is a complete dependence or reliance. In the 19th century the greatest tightrope walker in the world was a man named Charles Blondin, and he once strung a tightrope over Niagara Falls and walked over it, attracting enormous crowds. Once he walked over the tightrope on stilts. Another time he took a chair and a stove with him and sat down midway across, cooked an omelet and ate it. Once he carried his manager across riding piggyback. Once he pushed across a wheelbarrow loaded with 350 pounds of cement. On one occasion he asked the cheering spectators if they thought he could push a man across sitting in a wheelbarrow. A roar of approval rose from the crowd. Spying a man cheering loudly, he asked, “Sir, do you think I could safely carry you across in this wheelbarrow?” “Yes, of course.” “Get in,” said Blondin. The man refused.

Saving faith is “getting in the wheelbarrow.” It's banking your eternal destiny on Jesus Christ and on no one or nothing else. It's relying on Christ alone and not your baptism, church membership, a “sinner's prayer,” or good works. It is affirming that Christ's death is not merely “necessary,” but that it is enough! That it is sufficient all by itself to pay for your sins apart from any human effort or good work. (see Galatians 2:21; 3:10-14)

God the Father is fully satisfied with Jesus Christ's payment for your sins. Are you? Will you transfer your trust to Jesus at this moment and be saved?
